Position Description:

Our client is the leading FMCG manufacturing concern in East Africa, its products ranging from oral care, skin care and foods through to various metals and industrial plastics. From its hub in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, they export to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, the DRC, Zambia, Malawi and South Africa.

Their most leading FMCG brand is the highest selling toothpaste in Tanzania, with “Super Brand” status. As a result of growth, this leading company in a stable African country now offers this exceptional opportunity for a Head of Exports

Reporting to the COO, you will be responsible for developing volume, value, margin, product and geographic strategy for the export business in countries outside Tanzania.

Job Duties/ Responsibilities/ Accountabilities:

• Develop the Company into a brand led, consumer focused business with a clear marketing and sales plan, consistent with business strategy for each country.

• Effectively deliver our FMCG brands to end consumers. Develop Channel Strategy for each country based on its identified key channels, their relative importance, and actions required growing within each channel.

• Develop promotion programs by channel, execute approved programs, monitor, evaluate and present results to head office.

• Prepare annual channel program budget, control spending and review spending effectiveness on a program-by-program and monthly basis.

• Budgets including volume, spending, share and maintain trade price stability through all channels and regions

• Pro-actively seek out new opportunities to enhance brand awareness and volume and lead strategic planning, including corporate positioning, market and competitive analysis, customer segment selection and penetration plans, and related product-wise price positioning.

• Oversee marketing communications including brand development, public relations, and advertising.

• Oversee product management for existing and new products including market research, product pricing and product lifecycle management, and interfacing with production.

• Coordinate with customers, business partners and production teams to develop and manage the Company’s entire export budget, including setting annual sales and profitability targets.

• Manage relationships with international distributors / subsidiaries in export markets.

• Oversee market research and two-way customer communication in order to better understand product perception, product applicability, marketing effectiveness and brand innovation/product extension opportunities – for each country.

• Periodically review country economic trends and competition after initial benchmarking on various parameters and take course correction where necessary.

Key Performance Indicators/ Performance Goals:

• Overall International sales growth

• Enhanced profit margins

• Development of systems providing robust and timely market research in target markets

• Growth in market share of key products/brands

• Volume and profitability of individual product lines and/or brands relative to budget

• Introduction of successful products

Key requirements:

• 10+ years experience in a brand focused FMCG company marketing/sales/business development positions of similar sized or larger business.

• 5+ years experience Export sales, in effectively managing multiple business partners in Export markets preferably in Africa region

• Experience in setting up distribution channel network, implementing or developing successful below the line programs in leading companies with more brand focused strategies

• Emerging market FMCG experience required, preferably in Africa.

• Experience of managing a diverse product portfolio in household, personal care and foods

• Knowledge and experience of Export trading blocs, tariff agreements and other export logistics related issues like shipping, documentation etc.

• Comfortable with regular and frequent international travel

• Has managed a sales or marketing team
